About the Role
As Estates Manager, you’ll play a vital role in managing a portfolio of approximately 30 residential properties for UK diplomatic staff in Tanzania. You’ll also oversee the official residence of the British High Commission. This is a strategic, high-impact leadership position within the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) Operations and Corporate Services team.
You’ll ensure all properties are safe, secure, and meet UK Government standards—while also leading a skilled team and managing relationships with landlords, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a Team: Manage and inspire a diverse team of 20+ professionals including technicians, administrative staff, and support personnel.
- Property Oversight: Supervise maintenance and repairs across the estate, ensuring safety, comfort, and compliance.
- Housing Management: Identify, negotiate, and allocate accommodation for UK staff in accordance with government policy.
- Committee Leadership: Serve as Secretary to the Post Housing Committee, playing a key role in decisions related to accommodation and health standards.
- Budget Control: Handle an annual estate budget of approximately TZS 5.8 million, ensuring accurate planning, execution, and reporting.
- Strategic Projects: Collaborate with regional and headquarters teams on long-term estate development and preventive maintenance planning.
Who We’re Looking For
This role demands a proactive, solution-oriented professional with a proven track record in property management and team leadership. The ideal candidate will be adaptable, decisive, and a confident communicator.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in property management
- Proven experience managing teams of 10+ people
- Budget management experience for projects exceeding £50,000
- Strong negotiation and communication skills
- Recognized property management certification
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Desirable
- Familiarity with UK Health and Safety regulations
- Experience in international or diplomatic environments
Salary and Benefits
- Monthly Salary: TZS 5,817,771 (subject to local tax regulations)
- Working Hours: 35.5 hours per week
- Location: British High Commission, Dar es Salaam
- Start Date: 1 July 2025
- Contract Type: Fixed-term (renewable)
