Duty Station: Coastal Region, Tanzania
Position: Regional Agronomist
Reports to: Production Lead
Job Overview
The Regional Agronomist will play a critical role in:
- Enhancing farmers’ productivity through extension services and modern farming techniques.
- Promoting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and climate-smart solutions to tackle soil degradation, pests, and diseases.
- Strengthening market linkages and empowering farmers to operate in a commercial and sustainable manner.
- Supporting the promotion of sustainable farming practices and agribusiness models.
Key Responsibilities
1. Production Support
- Mobilize farmers into formal groups and register them with TAHA.
- Establish crop clusters for GAP training, agro-dealer engagement, and market access.
- Set up demonstration farms to showcase modern production, harvesting, and post-harvest techniques.
- Introduce innovative horticultural practices and empower farmers with business-oriented extension services.
- Organize farmer field days, workshops, and training sessions.
- Conduct surveys to identify challenges in production, harvesting, and transportation, and provide practical solutions.
- Strengthen relationships with Local Government Authorities (LGAs) and other key partners.
2. Market Access & Linkages
- Identify and develop local, regional, and international market opportunities.
- Create sustainable market linkages to connect farmers with buyers.
- Assess farmers’ business capacity and propose strategies to strengthen competitiveness.
- Facilitate networking sessions between farmers, traders, and other stakeholders.
- Support the development of collection and distribution centers for smallholder farmers.
3. Partnerships & Collaboration
- Identify ground partners and coordinate resources for maximum impact.
- Build strong networks with private sector actors, development partners, and community stakeholders.
4. Reporting & Representation
- Prepare timely and high-quality reports in collaboration with the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) team.
- Represent TAHA in events related to production, technology, and agricultural innovation.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education:
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture, Agricultural Extension, or Crop Production & Management.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in agricultural development, focusing on horticulture and crop production.
- Proven knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), irrigation, harvesting, and post-harvest management.
- Experience in establishing and managing farmer groups, collection, and distribution centers.
- Strong background in market analysis and agricultural marketing strategies.
- Key Skills:
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Strong technical and analytical ability.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with public and private sector stakeholders.
