Introduction to HakiElimu
Founded in 2001, HakiElimu is an independent civil society organization committed to advancing human rights and education in Tanzania. With a mission to transform education through research, policy influence, and community engagement, HakiElimu envisions an open, just, and democratic Tanzania where education fosters equity, creativity, and critical thinking. The new Executive Director will play a pivotal role in strengthening HakiElimu’s legacy and bringing fresh energy to its mission.
Overall Responsibility of the Executive Director
The Executive Director (ED) is the chief leader of HakiElimu, responsible for:
- Providing strategic leadership and guiding staff.
- Ensuring effective, transparent, and accountable systems.
- Building strong external partnerships at both national and global levels.
- Leading fundraising initiatives and cultivating relationships with donors, partners, and stakeholders.
- Representing HakiElimu in civil society, government, and international forums with integrity and credibility.
Key Responsibilities
- National and International Influence & Advocacy
- Represent HakiElimu on regional and global platforms.
- Build alliances with leaders to promote citizen-centered reforms.
- Use media and advocacy channels to amplify the organization’s voice.
- Strategic Development
- Lead the design and implementation of organizational strategies.
- Navigate external challenges while achieving measurable impact.
- Secure sustainable funding partnerships to safeguard independence.
- Leadership & Organizational Culture
- Work with the Board for effective governance.
- Cultivate a culture of humility, collaboration, and shared decision-making.
- Inspire innovation, accountability, and impact-driven practices across the team.
Experience and Qualifications
The ideal candidate should:
- Be a Tanzanian citizen with at least 10 years of leadership experience in initiatives involving government, civil society, and citizens.
- Hold a Master’s degree (preferred) or a Bachelor’s degree with exceptional experience.
- Demonstrate a strong track record in engaging with high-level leaders and securing funding.
- Possess excellent communication skills in both Swahili and English.
- Exhibit integrity, credibility, and the ability to build strategic alliances.
