The organization has announced an exciting Consultancy Opportunity for the Upgrade of its E-Learning Platform and the Digitization of Learning Content — a project aimed at transforming how Fairtrade delivers knowledge and capacity-building support to over 1.4 million smallholder farmers and workers across 29 countries.

About Fairtrade Africa (FTA)

Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is part of the global Fairtrade International movement, representing certified producer organizations across Africa and the Middle East. The organization operates through four regional networks:

  • Eastern and Central Africa Network (ECAN) – based in Nairobi, Kenya
  • West Africa Network (WAN) – based in Accra, Ghana
  • Southern Africa Network (SAN) – based in Blantyre, Malawi and South Africa
  • Middle East and North Africa Network (MENA)

FTA’s mission is to support producers of traditional and non-traditional export commodities — including coffee, tea, cocoa, flowers, sugar, bananas, cotton, wine, shea butter, and rooibos tea — through fair trade practices and sustainable livelihoods.

Purpose of the Consultancy

The FTA e-learning platform plays a central role in training, knowledge-sharing, and capacity building. To ensure it remains user-friendly, accessible, and impactful, FTA seeks to upgrade the platform and digitize its training materials. This initiative will enhance the delivery of training across the continent, ensuring that producers, partners, and staff can access updated learning materials aligned with the latest Fairtrade Standards.

Key Objectives

  • Upgrade the FTA e-learning platform for improved performance, usability, and accessibility
  • Revise and digitize 13 existing training manuals and develop one new interactive online learning module
  • Integrate multimedia features such as animations, case studies, and quizzes to enhance engagement
  • Ensure the platform supports multiple languages, offline access, and low-bandwidth environments

Scope of Work

The selected consultant or firm will collaborate with Fairtrade Africa’s subject matter experts to redesign and upgrade the e-learning system. The consultancy involves both technical and instructional design components.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Management

  • Attend project kick-off meetings to align on goals and deliverables
  • Provide regular progress updates and collaborate on content reviews
  • Develop a comprehensive project plan and timeline

2. Content Design and Development

  • Review and enhance existing learning materials
  • Create storyboards and interactive modules based on approved designs
  • Develop engaging visuals, infographics, case studies, and quizzes
  • Ensure cultural relevance and regional inclusivity

3. E-Learning Platform Upgrade

  • Redesign the platform interface for easier navigation
  • Optimize speed, loading time, and content organization
  • Add multilingual options (e.g., English, French, Swahili, Arabic, Portuguese)
  • Enable offline access and low-data modes
  • Include subtitles and transcripts for all video content

Expected Deliverables

By the end of the consultancy, the consultant or firm is expected to deliver:

  • Inception Report – detailing methodology, timelines, and instructional design approach
  • Upgraded E-Learning Platform – responsive, fast, and multilingual
  • Digitized Training Modules – 21 modules with quizzes, interactive elements, and certification
  • Final Report – summarizing outcomes, lessons learned, and sustainability recommendations

FTA will retain full ownership of all materials developed under this project.

Eligibility Criteria

Interested consultants or firms must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in e-learning development and Moodle-based platform upgrades
  • Proven success in developing online learning content for low-bandwidth regions, preferably within Africa
  • Strong project management and communication skills
  • Demonstrated portfolio of similar projects in digital training, Moodle customization, or instructional design

Proposal Requirements

Applicants should submit a complete proposal that includes:

  • A cover letter summarizing understanding of the assignment
  • Detailed consultant profile and CVs of team members
  • Two or more reference letters from similar past assignments
  • A proposed methodology and implementation plan
  • Itemized financial proposal (USD) including all applicable fees and taxes
  • Optional section demonstrating added value or innovation the consultant brings
