Tanzania Expands Higher Education Loan Budget: From TZS 464 Billion to 787 Billion

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, announced this remarkable increase during a press briefing in Dodoma. The event, held at the Information Services Department (MAELEZO), was part of the government’s four-year performance review.

Prof. Mkenda highlighted that this substantial financial commitment is a reflection of President Samia’s ongoing vision to improve access to higher education and support Tanzanian students across the country.

Strategic Investments in Medical Education and Innovation

In addition to the loan increase, the Ministry is making transformative strides in the medical education sector:

  • Three Centers of Excellence in Health Education: The government will establish two new regional centers of excellence in medical training, in collaboration with:
  • Benjamin Mkapa Hospital & University of Dodoma (UDOM)
  • Mloganzila Hospital
  • These additions will complement an existing center, bringing the total to three centers of excellence in East Africa for medical education hosted in Tanzania.
  • Specialized Center for Cardiovascular Education and Research: An advanced institute focusing on cardiovascular diseases will be built at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI). With a funding boost of USD 83 million, the new facility is poised to become a leading regional hub for heart and vascular research and training.
