Position Overview

  • Title: Information Management Officer (GIS & Esri Systems)
  • Location: Morogoro, Tanzania (70%+ in-country presence)
  • Contract Type: 12-month full-time consultancy
  • Start Date: As soon as possible

  • Reports To: Global Information Systems Manager & CEO
  • Works With: APOPO’s Tanzania Program Teams (TB, Rat Training, Wildlife Detection, HeroTREE), Global ISM Team, APOPO HQ

APOPO is a non-profit organization headquartered in Morogoro, Tanzania. We specialize in training scent detection animals—famously known as HeroRATs—to tackle global challenges such as:

  • Landmine detection
  • Tuberculosis diagnosis
  • Wildlife trafficking prevention
  • Environmental conservation

Role Summary

We are looking for a motivated Information Management Officer with a solid foundation in GIS and a passion for systems development. You’ll be instrumental in designing and deploying Esri-based data systems across multiple field programs, supporting everything from animal training workflows to conservation efforts.

This position is best suited for a rising GIS professional who is ready to take on responsibility, collaborate with diverse teams, and work in a dynamic, field-based environment.

Key Responsibilities

System Development & Deployment

  • Design and deploy Esri systems for:
    • Rat training & animal welfare
    • TB lab diagnostics
    • Wildlife detection programs
    • HeroTREE environmental monitoring
  • Build intuitive tools using:
    • Survey123, Field Maps, Dashboards, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online
  • Ensure scalability, sustainability, and ease of use for field teams
  • Coordinate lab and workflow data integration

Stakeholder Collaboration & Capacity Building

  • Understand field needs and system requirements
  • Provide training on Esri tools and workflows
  • Support smooth adoption and handover to local teams

Data Quality & Integration

  • Maintain best practices in data structure, integrity, and metadata
  • Ensure project-wide compatibility and documentation
  • Establish strong data governance protocols

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
  • 1–3 years of hands-on experience with:
    • ArcGIS Pro, AGOL, Survey123, Field Maps, Dashboards
    • Geodatabase and relational database design
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Excellent organization and data management skills
  • Full fluency in English

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in international or low-resource field settings
  • Familiarity with Python or Arcade scripting
  • Interest in APOPO’s mission areas (e.g., animal welfare, TB, conservation, demining)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Consultancy Fee: Approx. $50,000 USD (12 months)
  • Housing: Provided in Morogoro
  • Travel: One round-trip international flight + one annual leave flight
  • Tools Provided: Laptop and field data collection devices
  • Office Base: Morogoro, with occasional travel to project sites
